Does size matter?

Who only drinks one glass of wine?
Can I stay healthy and drink more than one glass of wine a day? With all the cancer scares I wanted to know how much I could drink safely.

What is the correct serving size for a glass of wine? Why are wines severed in glasses only half full or sometimes less? How many servings are in a bottle of wine? What’s the best dessert wine serving size? These are questions I’ve asked myself and wanted to share the answers…

Like in life some size matters & some doesn’t

A standard bottle of wine has 750 milliliters, or five 5-ounce glasses of wine, which is considered the correct serving, but the size of the glass doesn’t matter. All that extra room in the glass helps aerate the wine for optimal swirling and smelling. Now dessert wines are different, based on the same 750 milliliters you are only supposed to get 3 ounces or 8 glasses of wine. I guess that’s why they are served in very cute little glasses to take your mind off how small the serving size is. OK I will stop thinking the restaurant is jipping me out of my wine. But I will not complain if they accidentally pour me a few extra ounces 🙂

Surprising facts about cancer, wine, and what the overall research says:

  • Women who drink red wine at least once per week were 16% less likely to get diabetes than those women who didn’t drink regularly.
  • Red wine appears to have anticancer benefits because of the antioxidant resveratrol.
  • Look at the vineyard. Vineyards located in cooler, moist climates seem to grow grapes with larger amounts of reseratrol.
  • Blood tests showed that those who drank red wine each day had higher levels of antioxidants in their bloodstream and decreased levels of a substance used to measure the damage that free radicals do to cells.
  • The positive effects of drinking red wine was about the same regardless of age.
  • Wine may be the healthier choice over beer or spirits. Researchers in Spain tested the same people daily for a month with wine, then a month with spirits, the entire time they were on the Mediterranean diet. The wine drinkers had reduced biomarkers of inflammation that indicate artherosclerosis, the effects of wine consumption were significantly greater than those seen for spirits.
  • Moderate daily consumption increases the HDL (good) cholesterol and reduces the LDL (bad) cholesterol.
  • 3 drinks per day for men and 1 or 2 drinks per day for women was recommended.
  • Don’t save up your 2 drinks for the week and drink them all in one day.

After doing this research I’m going to try to stay on a healthy Mediterranean diet. I will look up some delicious recipes and post them. Personally I don’t drink that much during the week, sometimes not at all. On the weekends if I’m out, I usually only have a glass or two of  Zinfandel or Riesling, and my husband usually has a glass or two of Pinot Noir. If I’m home I may have up to three glasses on occasion. Doesn’t everything in life basically come down to moderation and balance. My good internal voice usually tells me when I’ve overindulged in anything, I just need to listen to it a little more closely.
