Dance Moms Wine Pairings :-)

dance-momsI have a guilty pleasure, the TV show Dance Moms.

While I was watching the latest episode I started comparing them to wines, and I wanted to share my comparisons with those of you that watch this show.  I miss  seeing Christi, Chole, Kelly, Brooke & Paige, but I’m sure they are better off without the stress of this show.

I keep wondering how long will “Dance Moms” be around, how long will these moms put up with the verbal abuse? I know these moms love their children, and think that the ALDC is the way to get exposure, and help their children with their future careers.

Abby appears to think she is the next Simon Cowell of dance. She speaks her mind regardless of anyone’s feelings which makes entertaining TV, but a lot of her comments are more than direct, they are downright mean, hurtful, and not helpful.   Hollywood is fickle, it loves to build folks up just to tear them down. It wouldn’t surprise me if we see more dancers leave, a new dance company emerge (other than Candy Apples), and a new star shine, maybe named Chole (I hope).

Sooo if Abby and the dance moms were wine here is what I think they would be:

Abby – Cabernet Sauvignon: A big, fat, dry, tart red wine know as “king or bully of the reds”.  A complex wine that pairs best with dead red meat, lamb, venison, and game dishes. Her version wouldn’t be balanced, it would definitely have lots of tannins and acidity, in which aging will not make it any better.

Holly – Pino Noir: a bright, fruitful and intense flavor underscored by earthy tones. This wine pairs well with just about everything. Smooth tannins and just the right amount of acidity.

Melissa – Chardonnay: A dry white wine that pairs well with specific recipes. Often has a velvety finish with citrus flavors. This wine can appear buttery but watch out it changes dramatically if it’s fermented in steel rather than Abby Oak.

Jill – Pinot Grigio: A dry white wine that pairs well with whatever suits it best at the time. It has a crisp bite with aromatic fruity flavors. Can go with everything or nothing depending on the vintage.

Kira – Cabernet Franc:  is lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon, making a bright pale red wine that contributes finesse and lends a peppery perfume to blend with more robust grapes.

Christi – Riesling: A dry to sweet white wine that pairs well with everything but Abby. Riesling grapes can grow in colder climates, they can withstand bad weather and still produce beautiful fruit.

Kelly – Viognier: A dry to medium white wine that pairs well with most, you definitely don’t want to pair it with Abby. It has floral and citrus undertones that are perfect on a warm spring day.

I was a dance mom for many years when my daughters were young. They danced for fun, flexibility, friendship, performing in front of an audience, competition, exercise, and learned a lot from it.

I think this quote sums up “Dance Moms” best:

There is a bit of insanity in dancing that does everybody a great deal of good.
~Edwin Denby
