Pinot Noir Fight – Burgundy vs Napa

And the winner is…

My quest for the perfect Pinot Noir continues…

Does Burgundy or Napa have the best Pinot Noir?

Trader Joes Bouchaine Pinot NoirI bought three wines, two from the Burgundy area of France and one from Napa in California.

  1. The most expensive wine was the Burgundy Chateau de Mercey, $19.99 at Total Wine. I was expecting this one to be the best.
  2. The second wine was a Napa 2011 Bouchaine Pinot Noir, $14.99 at Trader Joe’s.
  3. The third wine was a Burgundy Louis Chavy Bourg Grand Ordinaire, $13.99 at Total Wine.

After tasting all three wines I REALLY DISLIKED the
Burgundy Louis Chavy Bourg Grand Ordinaire for $13.99.Bourgogne Grand Ordinaire I really hate to say this (my opinion only) but it had the mineral taste of watered down blood, and an old musty tea-bag after taste. With each sip I kept getting images in my mind of old used sanitary napkins made of tea bags. I guess you can tell this was my least favorite.

Chateau de MerceyChateau De Mercey

This was the most expensive of the 3 wines I bought priced at $19.99.  I thought it was a nice wine and it had complex flavors, a gentle nose and smooth berry flavors. It brought back my faith in Burgundy wines!

And the winner is….

Trader Joes Bouchaine Pinot NoirMy new all time favorite Pinot Noir wine is Napa’s 2011 Bouchaine Pinot Noir, priced at $14.99 from Trader Joe’s. Lots of complexity, berry flavors, just the right acidity, and an outstanding nose. Watch out France and Willamette Valley, Napa is closing in and producing some of the best Pinot’s on the market.

Have your own wine test and let me know your favorite Pinot 🙂
