Is a specific wine glass important or is drinking from a red Solo cup ok?
For those of you that know me you may think that I would embrace the less expensive Solo cup because it’s the best deal. But in this case it makes sense to purchase the correct glass to get the most out of your wine. At the end of the day it’s all about the taste of the wine you are drinking, even if it’s only a $2.95 Chardonnay. Having the correct wine glass can make all the difference.
You don’t need a glass for every type of wine, but I like having at least two glasses, one for reds, and one for whites, blush, and sparkling wines.
For red wine I recommend the Pinot Noir wine glass.
- This glass has a slightly curved inward top for best aromas, and wide bottom with plenty of room to swirl the wine with air to let it breath, and unlock flavors.
For white, blush, and sparkling wines I recommend Sauvignon Blanc glasses.
- The wine glass should be more of a “U” shape to help keep the wine cooler.
- It will have a slightly larger opening to allow the sides, back, and tip of your tongue to taste the sweetness or bold flavors of the wine.
- You can also use this glass to drink sparkling wines but if you really enjoy bubbly wine you may want to indulge in a champagne flute. They are narrower than most wine glasses to retain the carbonation and capture the flavor.
For all wine glasses:
- The glass should be clear so you can see the color, quality, and texture of the wine.
- The glass must have a stem so the heat from your hand won’t affect the temperature and taste of the wine. Part of the fun of wine tasting is watching the wine swirl, and viewing the sugar legs, it’s not as much fun watching through fingerprints 🙂
- If you can afford crystal go for it, yes crystal is more fragile but it offers a better experience. I love the feel of the crystal on my lips and the clarity of the tendrils of sugar running back down into the glass.
I look at a wine glass as an investment in my wine tasting experience. Think of it like buying a good purse or shoes, it may cost a little more at first but in the long run they pay for themselves.
Cheers – Carrie
